About Youth Forward
Youth Forward is an initiative being implemented in partnership with The Mastercard Foundation and four consortia made up of 28 implementing partners and private and public stakeholders in Ghana and Uganda. Its focus is to link young people to quality employment or to start their own businesses in the agriculture and construction sectors. This five-year, US$74 million initiative will reach more than 200,000 economically disadvantaged, out-of-school youth aged 15-24.
The Youth Forward initiative uses a holistic approach that combines market-relevant skills training, mentorship, internships and access to financial services to help young people transition out of poverty and into sustainable livelihoods. In Uganda, Youth Forward is implemented by Y.E.T.A led by NCBA-CLUSA working in Masindi, Kiryandongo, Kole and Dokolo districts, and by DYNAMIC, led by GOAL, in Abim, Agago, Gulu, Kaabong, Kitgum, Lamwo, Lira, Omoro and Pader Districts.
The initiative also has a learning partnership led by Overseas Development Institute with Participatory Development Associates (in Ghana) and Development Research and Training (DRT) (in Uganda) that works across the program to develop an evidence-based understanding of the needs of young people, and how the different approaches and contexts interact to meet these needs and shape employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in program countries.
The Initiative for Youth Empowerment and Transformation (IYET) is a national-level youth sector engagement group on youth in agriculture. The committee is made up of persons serving as “champions” for young people, and working to address the barriers in the policy environment through dialogue and engagement of influential stakeholders such as government, the private sector, financial service providers, nongovernmental organizations and young people. The IYET was formed to link Youth Forward - a youth economic empowerment programme implemented in partnership with the Mastercard foundation - to national and muti-stakeholder processes thereby enhancing the sustainability of youth programs in Uganda.Through IYET, the Youth Forward initiative and other initiatives will be able to better understand and respond to youth needs that current initiatives do not adequately address thus enhancing program effectiveness and sustainability.
The IYET facilitates repeated interactions among different stakeholders groups to enable shared understanding of gaps, constraints and opportunities for youth in agriculture, thus expanding the effectiveness and impact of youth programmes in Uganda.
