01Ensure that youth in agriculture issues are embedded within broader national and sector contexts in Uganda

The IYET recognises the important role of agriculture in promoting sustainable youth enterprises. The IYET continuously seeks to identify the challenges and opportunities of youth employment and entrepreneurship in agriculture, ensuring that youth issues are placed at the centre of livelihood programming in Uganda. Some of the ways in which the IYET contributes to achieving this objective are as follows:

  1. The IYET conducts field visits to interact with youth in agriculture, particularly in Northern Uganda to learn first-hand from their experiences and identify together with them the challenges and opportunities in agriculture
  2. The IYET holds regular multi-stakeholder meetings meetings to discuss the issues of youth in agriculture and how to address them. These meetings bring together several actors in the youth, agriculture, and livelihoods space. Through these repeated interactions, the issues of youth in agriculture remain at the centre of livelihood programming.
  3. There are a number of platforms that exist whose objectives focus on development issues in Uganda. The IYET advocates for the youth on various platforms including, holding meetings with relevant actors to highlight the plight of youth in agriculture.

02Create a platform for young people’s voices to be heard

In order to ensure that youth remain part of the development process and are involved in programming, the IYET embarks on the following:

  1. Network with relevant actors to identify platforms for youth to share their experiences
  2. Coordinate with relevant actors to ensure that youth participate in such platforms
  3. Support and empower young people to speak about their experiences
  4. Serve as ombudsman for the youth and further voice youth concerns on their behalf

03Contribute to strengthening programming, policy and research of youth in agriculture

Through its activities, the IYET contributes towards the identification of broader patterns related to economic opportunities for youth, and better understand how the (intended or unintended, positive and negative) outcomes vary contextually. Research that produces evidence-based recommendations has the potential to enrich future youth policies and programming. The IYET under this objective works towards:

  1. Reviewing research on youth in agriculture in various contexts and using the findings to inform policies
  2. Providing recommendations to partners on good practices documented from own experiences, experiences from like-minded partners, and research
  3. Conducting round table discussion with partners and key actors to discuss how to improve evidence-based practices, policy and  youth programming. Round table meetings are held at least 4 times a year.
